Fantasy sports rise in Philippines as skill-based play gains ground
Fantasy sports in the Philippines is expanding as local fans embrace strategy-based gameplay rooted in analysis, decision-making, and real-world performance, according to Jeff Chao, Business Development Manager at Daily Fantasy.
Speaking exclusively with SiGMA World, Chao said the country’s strong sporting culture and digital habits naturally support the growth of skill-based fantasy platforms.
“Filipino fans have a strong sports culture supported by high social media engagement and real interest in data, stats, and team performance. These habits translate well into skill-based play where decisions depend on analysis rather than luck,” he said.
Chao added that the rise of analytics tools and accessible sports content is accelerating adoption. “As access to sports content and analytics tools improves, more fans are discovering that fantasy rewards informed strategy.”
Educating players on skill-based gameplay remains a challenge
Chao noted that one of the biggest hurdles in introducing fantasy sports is public perception. “A major challenge is addressing the common perception that fantasy sports fall under chance-based gaming. We have to clearly show that outcomes are tied to real-world performance and user decision making.”
He shared that the company continues to invest in user education, transparent scoring methods, and responsible play initiatives. “It takes time, but consistent communication helps audiences understand that fantasy is rooted in skill.”
Philippine fantasy sports ecosystem expected to strengthen in coming years
For the next three to five years, Chao sees an evolving landscape shaped by clearer regulations, partnerships with leagues and sport communities, better technology, and broader access to performance data. “The ecosystem is likely to grow through clearer regulations, more partnerships with leagues, and greater adoption among serious sports communities.”
He said these developments will help fantasy sports take their place within the broader sports economy. “These elements will help establish fantasy sports as a recognised skill-based sector within the broader sports economy.”
Daily Fantasy launches ‘Tius Your Play’ to push skill-driven engagement
Supporting this growth, Daily Fantasy, a PAGCOR-licensed game, has launched “Tius Your Play,” a campaign that allows Filipino fans to draft teams, make coaching-style decisions, and compete using basketball knowledge and analytics.
