Veteran Macau gaming executive Hubert Wang has joined Sands China Ltd as Chief Operating Officer (COO), effective 1 June (Monday), according to a statement from Sands China Chief Executive Officer and President Grant Chum Kwan Lock.
Wang will report directly to Chum and join the Sands China Executive Committee, overseeing gaming and resort operations, market development, international marketing and loyalty marketing.
“Hubert will join the Sands China executive committee and oversee gaming and resort operations, market development, international marketing, and loyalty marketing,” Chum said in the statement.
The company described Wang as a seasoned executive with three decades of experience in the gaming and integrated resort sector and extensive knowledge of the Macau market.
“I am confident Hubert will be a valuable addition to our senior executive team, as we continue to strengthen our market leadership,” Chum added.
Leadership appointment comes at a pivotal time
Wang’s appointment comes as Macau continues to pursue economic diversification and tourism development initiatives. In a keynote speech at G2E Asia in May, Chum said Macau’s diversification story remained a work in progress and that the integrated resort industry would need to reach a “new level” over the next five to ten years.
According to Chum, the next phase of Macau’s development will depend on deeper integration between gaming and non-gaming offerings, alongside stronger investment in tourism-related sectors such as meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE), entertainment and luxury retail.
“I think diversification will continue to progress if we focus on integration,” Chum said during the event. “It started with integrating gaming, non-gaming, [and] progressed to integrating all the diverse non-gaming amenities.”
He argued that Macau’s collection of integrated resorts provides the city with a competitive advantage that would be difficult for other destinations in Asia to replicate over the coming decades.
The comments reflect the broader direction of Macau’s casino industry following the introduction of new concession agreements, which place greater emphasis on non-gaming investment and international tourism development. As the gaming industry continues to evolve across both land-based and digital channels, operators and enthusiasts alike are increasingly exploring online options, including best new online casinos, which have expanded significantly alongside the growth of regulated markets globally.
Supporting Sands China’s long-term strategy
Wang’s responsibilities align closely with several of the areas highlighted by Chum as critical to Macau’s next stage of growth. At G2E Asia, Chum said future success would require operators to move beyond physical infrastructure and focus on what he described as the integration of “hardware and software”. He emphasised the importance of branding, talent development and destination marketing in attracting international visitors and supporting longer stays.
He also highlighted the role of the MICE sector in driving higher visitor spending and strengthening Macau’s appeal as a global tourism destination.
The appointment of an executive with extensive operational, marketing and gaming experience could therefore play an important role in advancing Sands China‘s objectives as the company continues to invest in both gaming and non-gaming segments.
Macau’s gaming sector has continued its recovery since the pandemic period. According to data from the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ), Macau’s gross gaming revenue reached MOP247.40 billion (US$30.9 billion) in 2025, up 9.1 per cent year-on-year.
Meanwhile, the Macau government is implementing its 2024-2028 “1+4” development strategy, which aims to enhance integrated tourism while supporting the development of the health, finance, technology and events sectors.
The government has described economic diversification as essential to ensuring Macau’s long-term prosperity and sustainable development.
Departure from MGM China
Wang joins Sands China after departing MGM China Holdings in December 2025. MGM China said at the time that its President and Chief Operating Officer was leaving the company with immediate effect to pursue personal aspirations. The operator thanked him for his 14 years of service and said he had participated in initiatives that supported the company’s growth and development.
Following his departure, MGM China appointed Kenneth Feng as Chief Executive Officer, while Tian Han assumed the role of Chief Operating Officer.
Wang’s move to Sands China returns him to a senior leadership position within Macau’s gaming sector less than six months after leaving MGM China.
His appointment also places him at the centre of Sands China’s efforts to strengthen its market position while supporting Macau’s broader transition towards a more diversified tourism and leisure economy.
