Tension is building in South Africa as the record-breaking Powerball lottery jackpot remains unclaimed. With R124 million (about $6.7 million) from the 5 August 2025 draw up for grabs, Ithuba, the National Lottery’s authorised retailer in South Africa, stands ready to provide support to the lucky winner once they make an appearance. The company has already put in place a well-planned system in anticipation of this occurrence, thus guaranteeing not only jubilation but the proper handling of this life-changing amount.

A prize that waits to be claimed

The jackpot-winning ticket bought for just R37.50 ($2) through the Absa banking app was the result of the lucky winner’s own choice of numbers. Yet the massive jackpot win remains unpaid. Ithuba (the current national lottery operator) has also confirmed that banks initiate contact with winners immediately. Upon notification from the winner, a custom-made support package will be implemented to manage them through the process.

Charmaine Mabuza, Ithuba’s Chief Executive Officer, explained that the company’s focus extends beyond the sheer exhilaration of winning. She said, “Our goal is not just to celebrate the jackpot, but to provide comprehensive support that helps winners manage the emotional and practical challenges that come with sudden wealth.”

Professional advice on managing finances wisely

Another notable aspect of this support is the provision of specialist counsel on financial planning matters. Ithuba aims to ensure that the winner makes informed decisions about their newly acquired assets and thus ensures their conservation over time. Besides financial counselling, legal assistance will also be offered on issues of vital urgency, such as the creation of trusts and investment handling, thereby providing a solid framework for the efficient management of one’s financial assets. Mabuza highlighted the readiness of the organisation to support the winner: “Ithuba is ready to back South Africa’s recent Powerball lottery winner,” she added, highlighting the organisation’s dedication to the well-being of the winner.

Prioritising privacy and psychological support

Maintaining the winner’s privacy is a top priority for Ithuba. The organisation will conduct private announcements to safeguard the winner’s identity, respecting their right to confidentiality during this life-altering moment.

Apart from providing financial guidance, Ithuba will also offer free advisory and counselling services tailored for large lottery prize winners. The intention behind the advisory and counselling services is to alleviate the psychological pain of sudden wealth, thereby helping winners maintain their composure and navigate their new lives with confidence.

Encouraging responsible game playing and accepting moderate gains

While the focus is largely on the record-breaking jackpot prize payout, Ithuba also emphasises the need for players to check their tickets carefully. In the latest Powerball draw, seven players matched five numbers, each walking away with over R115,000 ($6,200). Additionally, 49 players each won prizes exceeding R10,000 ($540). Charmaine Mabuza said, “These winners bought their tickets using a range of convenient options, including retail stores, banking apps, our website, and our official app.”

A responsibility of sustainable support

By setting up the support system, Ithuba’s most important role is to guide the jackpot winner in using the new funds responsibly and sustainably. Aside from the thrill of the jackpot win, the organisation’s focus is on providing guidance, confidentiality, and establishing long-term prosperity for South African lottery jackpot winners.
