Philippine gaming technology company PhilWeb Corp. has appointed billionaire businessman Lance Gokongwei to its board of directors, just weeks after he made a PHP 2.03 billion ($33 million) strategic investment in the listed company.

The appointment comes as PhilWeb continues to expand its technology business and strengthen its presence in the Philippines’ regulated online gaming sector.

According to the company’s official statement on the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE), Gokongwei will help guide its long-term direction as it continues to invest in digital infrastructure, technology platforms, and AI-driven operations. PhilWeb believes his experience will also support its efforts to strengthen corporate governance and execute its long-term growth plans.

Currently leading JG Summit Holdings

Gokongwei currently serves as president and chief executive officer of JG Summit Holdings, one of the Philippines’ largest conglomerates, with businesses spanning aviation, food manufacturing, real estate and retail.

Commenting on his appointment, Gokongwei said technology and operational intelligence are becoming increasingly important across regulated digital industries.

“Technology infrastructure, operational intelligence, compliance systems and scalable digital platforms are becoming increasingly important across regulated digital ecosystems. I look forward to working closely with the board and management team as PhilWeb continues building long-term infrastructure, technology capabilities and operational scale,” he said.

PhilWeb President Edgar Brian Ng described the appointment as an important milestone in the company’s next stage of development. “PhilWeb is entering a new stage of operational scale, governance strengthening and technology-driven expansion. We believe this appointment further reinforces the company’s long-term direction and institutional development,” Ng said.

10% stake in PhilWeb

The board appointment follows Gokongwei’s investment agreement announced last month. The transaction initially gives him a 10 per cent stake in PhilWeb’s issued and outstanding common shares. If his 93.8 million redeemable preferred shares are fully converted, his ownership could increase to approximately 15 per cent, according to the company.

Despite the Gokongwei family’s known involvement in the Philippine gaming sector through NUSTAR Resort & Casino, PhilWeb has stressed that this investment was made in Gokongwei’s personal capacity rather than through JG Summit Holdings or any affiliated business. The appointment comes during a busy period for PhilWeb as it continues expanding its business-to-business gaming services.

Pragmatic Play deal to go live soon

Earlier this year, the company partnered with NUSTAR Online for licenced gaming operators in the Philippines. More recently, PhilWeb secured an exclusive partnership with Pragmatic Play, allowing licensed operators in the country to access the supplier’s gaming portfolio through PhilWeb’s technology platform.

The Pragmatic Play agreement is expected to go live during the third quarter of 2026 and forms part of the company’s broader strategy to grow recurring revenues through hosted gaming services and technology infrastructure rather than direct consumer operations.

With new strategic partnerships, fresh investment and now one of the Philippines’ most prominent business leaders joining its board, PhilWeb is likely to see more developments in the near future. The firm is likely to solidify its position within the country’s regulated online gaming industry.
