Macau welcomed approximately 20.94 million visitor arrivals in the first half of 2026, an increase of around nine per cent from the same period last year, according to figures released by the city’s Public Security Police.
The numbers were discussed during a community consultative committee meeting focused on improving passenger flow at Macau’s border checkpoints. While the figures have not yet been officially published, they indicate that tourism demand has remained strong through the first six months of the year.
Authorities used the meeting to discuss ways of handling growing passenger volumes more efficiently, particularly at Macau’s busiest land crossings with Zhuhai in China’s Guangdong Province. These checkpoints continue to handle the majority of travellers entering the city and remain a key focus for border management.
China remains the largest market
The police did not provide a detailed breakdown of where visitors came from. However, mainland China is expected to remain Macau’s largest source market, having consistently accounted for more than 70 per cent of visitor arrivals in recent years.
Seasonal travel also helped support tourism during the first half of the year. The Chinese New Year holidays and the Labour Day holiday period traditionally bring large numbers of mainland visitors to Macau, contributing to stronger visitor volumes during the opening months of the year.
Based on the unofficial figures, Macau is estimated to have welcomed around 2.80 million visitors in June. While still a strong monthly total, it was slightly below the 2.89 million arrivals recorded in June 2025. Official tourism statistics for June and the full first half of 2026 are expected to be released later this month.
Earlier official data had already pointed to solid momentum. Between January and May, Macau recorded 18.14 million visitor arrivals, representing an 11.1 per cent increase year-on-year. Much of that growth was driven by same-day visitors, which reached 11.25 million, up 17.6 per cent from a year earlier. Overnight visitors also increased, although at a more moderate pace, rising two per cent to 6.89 million during the same period.
Eyes on gaming revenue
The latest figures reinforce Macau’s continued recovery as one of Asia’s leading tourism and gaming destinations. Strong visitor numbers remain important for hotels, restaurants, retail businesses and the city’s integrated resort operators, all of which rely heavily on tourism.
However, visitor growth does not always translate directly into higher casino revenue. Industry data over the past two years has shown that while overall arrivals have continued to rise, gaming revenue per visitor has fluctuated, showing changing travel patterns and spending behaviour. Recent growth has increasingly been driven by leisure travellers and families rather than solely by high-value gaming customers.
Despite this, rising visitor volumes are being seen as a positive foundation for Macau’s tourism economy. With official first-half figures due later this month, industry stakeholders will be watching closely to see whether strong visitor traffic continues through the peak summer travel season and how it ultimately influences gaming and non-gaming performance across the market.
