OG Esports’ $OG fan token, launched in 2019 on the Chiliz blockchain via Socios, recently became the first esports fan token to reach a $100 million market capitalisation. The token’s rise this summer placed it among the most successful sports fan tokens globally, alongside those of major clubs like Barcelona, Manchester City, and PSG.
What are fan tokens?
Fan tokens are blockchain-based digital assets that provide access to certain features for sports and esports fans, such as voting on team decisions and exclusive content. In 2020, OG Esports partnered with Socios.com to introduce the $OG fan token, using the Chiliz blockchain platform. This marked an early adoption of blockchain for fan interaction in esports. OG Esports chose blockchain for its transparency, security, and global reach, aiming to connect its international fan base through a unified digital system.
The rise of $OG token
The $OG token increased 520 percent from $3.79 to almost $23 in June 2023. The spike was a result of more investors showing interest in fan tokens. According to CoinMarketCap data, trade volume increased significantly, with $OG peaking at $24.55 before levelling off between $22 and $23. The token’s limited supply, 5 million minted, with about 4.3 million in circulation, contributed to the price increase due to high demand and low availability.
Alexander Dreyfus, CEO of Chiliz and Socios, acknowledged OG Esports’ milestone on X, noting that they are the first esports team to reach a $100 million fully diluted value for their $OG token, supported by Chiliz and Socios.

The organisation behind the token
Johan “n0tail” Sundstein founded OG in 2015, and it gained recognition for its esport competition achievements. An important turning point in the professional Dota 2 landscape was reached in 2018 and 2019 when the team won The International. Later, OG expanded its position in the market by joining other esports games like VALORANT and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
The holder of the $OG token have the ability to vote on issues that affect the team, like event features and jersey designs. Access to events like meet-and-greets and behind-the-scenes material is provided by the token. Beyond match attendance, OG creates a participative atmosphere by allowing fans to participate in decision-making.
Market impact of the $OG token surge
The spike in $OG’s value coincided with gains in other esports-related coins. Since $OG is based on the Chiliz network, its spike helped to boost activity across the entire platform. Additionally, the event raised awareness of the potential uses of blockchain technology in esport on a larger scale.
Following the surge in the $OG fan token, several other esports tokens experienced notable gains. Team Heretics’ token ($TH) rose by 8.3 percent, moving from $0.0411 to $0.0445. Team Alliance ($ALL) saw a 4.8 percent increase, climbing from $0.038 to $0.04. Team Vitality ($VIT) recorded a 3.7 percent rise, from $0.032 to $0.034. MIBR ($MIBR) gained 1.6 percent, going from $0.0436 to $0.0448, while Ninjas in Pyjamas ($DOJO) posted a modest 1.06 percent growth, increasing from $0.895 to $0.911. These movements reflect a broader market response to the momentum generated by $OG’s performance.
Future of fan tokens in esports
Fans all throughout the world can access the $OG token through Socios.com on the Chiliz blockchain and on major exchanges including Binance, HTX, MEXC, BitGet, and Gate. Due to its popularity, other esports organisations might introduce tokens of a similar nature, and League of Legends, Rocket League, and Overwatch are probably going to follow. As adoption expands, blockchain could play a lasting role in reshaping how fans engage with esports teams.
