Promoting responsible gaming has become the need of the hour as the gaming industry continues to evolve in India. Industry experts have emphasised the importance of fostering a sustainable industry through transparency and ethical practices.
Speaking at an iGaming event in Sri Lanka, iGaming consultant Gourav Pilania highlighted the necessity of responsible gaming measures, given the lack of strict regulations in India.
While discussing the current landscape of gaming in the country, Pilania pointed out that India currently lacks specific restrictions. However, he stressed the need for a more responsible approach to gaming.
“At the end of the day, you have to promote responsible gaming in whatever way possible. We do have tickers and articles promoting responsible gaming, educating users on its importance,” he said.
He stressed that misleading claims in promotional content should be avoided. “We see many competitors making tall claims about bonuses, such as offering a 200% bonus up to a certain amount, which often isn’t the case. It’s important to explain the actual implications to users. While this might lead to some loss in revenue, in the long term, it’s about building trust and ensuring sustainability.”
Ensuring a sustainable gaming future in India
Pilania also discussed the role of Bollywood celebrities in promoting gaming brands, stating that some have faced investigations over their endorsements.
“You see a lot of Bollywood actors promoting these gaming brands, and some of them are under investigation,” Pilania remarked. “Such news doesn’t really contribute to a good cause. These people are being searched by authorities.” He further stressed that, for the long-term success of the industry, the focus should remain on promoting responsible gaming and fostering a sustainable culture. “In the Indian context, it’s essential to promote responsible gaming and create a sustainable culture around it. It can create jobs, generate taxes, and have a positive impact on the economy,” he concluded.
He concluded by reiterating the need for responsible gaming initiatives to safeguard players and strengthen the industry’s future in India.
India’s gaming industry has experienced massive growth in the recent years, and it has also emerged as one of the largest markets for mobile gaming, with millions of players engaging in a wide range of games. This growth has also been accompanied by a rise in gaming-related content and esports, further solidifying the gaming sector’s influence in the country. However, challenges such as regulation, responsible gaming practices, and tax demands remain key topics of discussion within the industry.
