Thailand launches task force on online gambling & scam funds
Thailand’s government has announced the formation of a special task force to trace suspicious financial flows linked to online gambling, scams, and other illicit activities that may be strengthening the baht despite weak economic fundamentals. Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas said the new “data bureau” will integrate information from multiple agencies and financial institutions to identify and track irregular money movements.
This comes as Thailand reinforces its ban on gambling and casino promotion. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul recently stated during talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping that his government “will not pursue casino legalisation.”
Data Bureau to connect financial intelligence
According to Bloomberg report, Ekniti while speaking to reporters on Wednesday, said the initiative will go beyond case-by-case investigations to establish new national standards for detecting suspicious transactions. The system is expected to become operational by December.
Prime Minister of Thailand Anutin Charnvirakul has directed Ekniti to lead the project in coordination with the Bank of Thailand and related state agencies. The initiative, called the “Connect the Dots” framework, aims to strengthen financial oversight and ensure closer cooperation among departments that monitor capital flows.
“The goal is to trace questionable funds to their ultimate recipients and prevent illicit money from entering the formal economy,” Ekniti said. He added that the task force will focus on understanding whether illegal financial movements are contributing to the baht’s resilience, which has puzzled analysts given Thailand’s slow economic recovery.
Crackdown on financial crimes
Prime Minister Anutin described the campaign as an “all-out war” against financial crimes. He said his administration has granted full authority to the task force to dismantle networks involved in scams, human trafficking, drug smuggling, and unlicensed online gambling.
“We have given agencies a blank check to act decisively,” Anutin told local media. “Our aim is to eliminate the financial pipelines that sustain criminal networks.”
Ekniti noted that “grey money” often flows through cryptocurrency exchanges, informal cash transfer systems, and gold or currency markets. Once inside Thailand, these funds are frequently laundered through luxury assets such as real estate, diamonds, and high-end vehicles.
Banks ordered to strengthen monitoring
The Bank of Thailand has issued fresh instructions to commercial lenders, requiring them to enhance their due diligence processes to detect and report unusual transfers. The directive reflects a broader effort by the government to modernise its anti-money-laundering framework and align local rules with international standards set by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).
Financial analysts believe the new coordination mechanism will help close long-standing regulatory gaps and improve Thailand’s reputation in global financial markets.
Focus on tourism with China
While tightening financial surveillance, the Thai government is also focusing on reviving its tourism sector, particularly by attracting more Chinese visitors. Government spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat said positive results are expected within one or two months as Thailand strengthens cooperation with Beijing.
During recent meetings at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in South Korea, Prime Minister Anutin reaffirmed to Chinese President Xi Jinping that Thailand remains opposed to legalising casinos. The assurance reportedly encouraged Beijing to consider measures to boost tourism to Thailand.
Authorities expect a significant rise in arrivals during the Lunar New Year in February 2026, which could help offset a decline in Chinese tourist numbers earlier this year.
Recently, Thai police launched an investigation into the Miss Universe Organisation (MUO) after a Filipino contestant was seen promoting an online gambling brand during pre-pageant events in Bangkok. The incident, which allegedly breached Thailand’s strict anti-gambling laws, occurred just weeks before the Miss Universe 2025 grand finale scheduled for 27 November.
