Africa’s gaming market is no longer a niche segment. It is steadily positioning itself as a global growth frontier. At the Africa Gaming Expo, the theme “Africa’s Gaming Market: Frontier to Prominence” reflected this shift. The conversation centred on scale, innovation, and long-term sustainability.

The continent’s market has recorded rapid expansion in recent years. Revenues reached $1.8 billion in 2024, up 12.4% year over year. This pace is six times faster than the global average. Such figures signal a transition from early-stage growth to global relevance.

Mobile gaming and mass adoption

Mobile gaming remains the core of the gaming industry in Africa, accounting for nearly 90% of total industry revenue. The proliferation of smartphone use in the region has driven the growth of mobile gaming, attracting millions of gamers into the industry. In fact, in 2024, the industry added 32 million gamers.

The ease of accessibility of mobile gaming, coupled with affordability and local consumption patterns, makes it a sought-after option for gamers. The popularity of mobile gaming is prompting game developers to create more mobile-friendly experiences, enabling a wider reach and greater engagement among gamers across diverse demographics.

Investment, innovations, and ecosystem growth

Today, the gaming ecosystem in Africa transcends gamers and revenue and encompasses fintech, esports, and local content creation. The growth of the gaming industry in Africa was also underscored by the inaugural Africa Gaming Expo, which brought together all stakeholders, including regulators and investors, on a single platform. The gaming industry in Africa currently stands at $2.29 billion and is expected to grow by more than 12% in the coming years.

Challenges shaping the growth narrative

However, despite good growth, there are underlying structural issues. For example, access to affordable high-speed internet remains limited, which affects the user experience. Payment systems in digital markets also differ.

Currently, less than 30% of the population has access to banking services. Such issues impact business, prevent further expansion into other markets, and have led some global players to be hesitant to localise their businesses further.

Unlocking Africa’s gaming potential

Africa’s strengths lie in its young, tech-savvy population. This demographic continues to fuel demand for digital entertainment. Countries like Egypt, Nigeria, and South Africa lead in revenue generation.

Emerging markets such as Kenya are also gaining momentum. As infrastructure improves, the market’s potential becomes clearer.

Cloud gaming, esports, and localised content offer new avenues for growth. The focus is shifting toward building sustainable ecosystems. This includes better regulation, improved payments, and stronger developer support.

A market on the rise

Africa’s gaming market is no longer in its frontier state but is now at a crossroads in establishing its presence on the global stage. The key to establishing its presence is innovation, driven by demand for digital experiences.

As stakeholders align around growth strategies, the outlook remains strong. Africa is not just participating in global gaming; it is shaping it. It is steadily redefining its place within it.
