AI-driven responsible gambling will define market leaders

Sportradar’s 29 July 2025 launch of Bettor Sense represents a significant development in AI-driven responsible gambling and its application in the global gaming industry. By catching risky play patterns early and intervening in real time, the AI is already being tested in practice, first with BETesporte in Brazil’s newly regulated market.

This development arrives at a crucial moment. With global regulatory pressure rising and operators under scrutiny to safeguard customers, AI-driven responsible gambling solutions are moving from optional compliance measures to integral components of competitive strategy.

Bettor Sense and Brazil’s regulatory test case

Bettor Sense scans live behavioural data, from betting habits and deposit cycles to the duration of sessions, to flag possible signs of gambling harm. When the system detects risk signals, it triggers tailored in-platform messages or prompts operator interventions.

Created in collaboration with the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, Bettor Sense uses behavioural science and data modelling to sharpen its risk detection.

The timing of its launch in Brazil is no coincidence. Brazil passed Law 14,790/2023 in December 2023; the regulated online betting market launched on 1 January 2025, following SPA’s first authorisations. Since then, the Secretariat of Prizes and Bets (SPA) has introduced some of the world’s most robust compliance rules covering responsible gambling, advertising, inspections and sanctions. In plain terms, operators need effective systems to monitor risk profiles and intervene, in line with stricter expectations now seen in Germany and the stepped-up certification and oversight regime in Italy. However, experts warn that large-scale behavioural monitoring raises real questions about data privacy and the potential for false positives, both of which require firm regulatory guardrails.

Industry projections suggest that Brazil’s betting sector could generate over R$10 billion annually in tax revenue once it matures. Federal data shows January–June 2025 collections already totalled around R$3.8–3.9 billion. BETesporte’s adoption of Bettor Sense positions it as an early mover on compliance.

Industry shift towards AI-driven protection

The global casino gambling market is forecast to reach $425.34 billion by 2033 with a CAGR of 6.02 percent, but it faces mounting regulatory demands. Operators and suppliers are increasingly using AI across the value chain, from personalisation to integrity and safer gambling.. However, the clearest quantified impact so far is in integrity, where AI helped identify approximately 73 percent of suspicious matches in 2023.

For responsible gambling specifically, newer AI systems are reported to be significantly more effective at identifying at-risk players before serious harm occurs. Regulated markets increasingly link this early detection capability to higher customer trust, fewer compliance breaches, and stronger licence security.

Financial strength supports innovation

The launch of Bettor Sense comes just after Sportradar posted record results in its Q2 2025 earnings. Revenue climbed 14 percent year-on-year to €318 million, while adjusted EBITDA jumped 31 percent to €64 million. Read the full Q2 story here.

The company also reported a 117 percent net customer retention rate and €52 million in free cash flow, giving it scope to invest further in AI solutions for compliance, integrity, and player protection. For operators, however, deploying such systems can involve substantial integration costs, training, and ongoing compliance audits, which may be more challenging for smaller market entrants.

This growth momentum is set against the backdrop of Sportradar’s pending regulatory approval for the IMG ARENA acquisition, where the integration of AI technology could provide additional commercial advantages.

Balancing responsibility with opportunity

With Brazilian opinion on betting split, operators using serious responsible gambling tools stand a better chance of earning lasting trust. According to analysts, proactive compliance could help prevent the SPA from imposing stricter measures in future updates to its framework.

Some stakeholders question whether AI can fully capture the nuances of player behaviour without generating false positives or missing warning signs, with most agreeing that human oversight remains essential to accurately interpret signals and act proportionately.

AI-driven responsible gambling will define market leaders

The success of Bettor Sense in Brazil will likely influence Sportradar’s rollout strategy in other regulated markets. With Germany enforcing a cross-operator €1,000 monthly deposit limit (with limited exemptions via LUGAS) and the UK introducing tighter marketing rules, direct-marketing opt-ins from 1 May 2025, and a “safer, simpler” promotions package announced on 26 March 2025, technology-led compliance is fast becoming a competitive separator.

The direction of travel is clear. AI-powered safeguards are moving from a compliance necessity to a tool that shapes competitive advantage. Operators that embed these tools effectively secure their licences, retain customers longer, and build trust, all of which are vital in a market under close watch.
