Thailand city lottery sales climb amid number craze
The city of Chiang Mai, located in northern Thailand, is experiencing a rapid increase in lottery ticket demand, with buyers gravitating towards numbers associated with recent military events and commemorative dates. Based on local media reports, vendors across the city, particularly in the Saraphi district along the Chiang Mai–Lamphun Road, report that many such tickets have sold out quickly ahead of the 1 August draw.
According to the report, popular two-digit choices include 73, 28, 10, and 04—numbers tied to reports of the Thai military’s control over 11 strategic sites. Other sought-after figures, such as 30 and 31, are also linked to ceasefire dates and the planting of the national flag during recent operations.
Three-digit numbers reflecting various elements of military activity—like 902, 495, 773, and 443—are also selling quickly. The reports added that these combinations have been associated with specific battle dates, ceasefire announcements, and the deployment of military equipment, including the Cambodian BM-21 rocket and the Thai M758 artillery. Some combinations, such as 758 and 292, are associated with significant dates, including the start of conflicts and peace declarations.
According to experts, the trend is being shaped not only by historical events but also by numerology and the influence of public figures. Reports said that lottery enthusiasts have chosen numbers based on the birthdays of former Prime Ministers Thaksin Shinawatra and Chuan Leekpai, as well as the late singer Phum Phuang Duangjan, whose birth and death dates continue to influence ticket choices. Her upcoming birthday on 4 August has drawn further attention to numbers such as 31 and 92.
Traditional beliefs and calendar numbers influence choices
Alongside military-related numbers, Thai-Chinese calendar sequences such as 789, 918, 89, and 18 remain widely favoured.
For the upcoming draw, popular combinations feature recurring digits, such as 6, 9, and 3, which influence both two-digit and three-digit selections. Numbers such as 63, 69, 13, 678, and 608 have also become top picks following analysis by local lottery commentators.
Growing interest follows launch of state-backed savings lottery
The development surrounding Chiang Mai’s lottery culture comes after the government’s recently passed “Retirement Lottery” programme. The initiative is designed to promote personal savings while offering participants a chance to win prizes through a legal and structured format.
Under the scheme, Thai citizens can purchase monthly lottery tickets worth THB 50 (€1.34), with a cap of THB 3,000 (€80). The government stated that the full amount will be treated as personal savings, which can be accessed upon retirement at the age of 60.
According to the government, the scheme aims to address widespread gambling habits by redirecting spending into a structured savings mechanism. Officials explained that, unlike traditional lottery formats where most funds are lost after each draw, the Retirement Lottery ensures that every baht contributes to an individual’s long-term financial security.

While the Retirement Lottery promotes long-term savings, current demand in Chiang Mai reflects the enduring popularity of short-term draws. Cultural practices, including merit-making ceremonies, spiritual beliefs, and a fascination with auspicious events, continue to fuel the region’s strong lottery culture.
