President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku, has stated that the ban on betting is a preventive measure aimed at combating the growing problem of match manipulation in Ghana. Okraku continues, “The ban is designed to ensure the outcomes of football matches in Ghana are determined purely on the abilities and endeavours of players on the pitch, and not on any other influence corrupting the integrity of the game like match-fixing.” This unequivocal stance demonstrates the association’s commitment to maintaining a fair playing field and protecting the integrity of the game.
By following the principles of fair play
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) endeavours to minimise opportunities and motives for corrupt acts on and off the pitch for football stakeholders, including officials and players, by implementing a ban on betting on local league football. The association has outlined that such initiatives are crucial to maintaining both the reputation and integrity of football in the country, since they not only engage fans and players, but also other stakeholders in football. According to Okraku, “By prohibiting betting on our domestic leagues, we are taking a strong stand against any form of manipulation and ensuring that football remains a fair and competitive sport.”

In addition to the ban on gambling, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is implementing regulations aimed at promoting responsible behaviour and conduct in the sport. Players’ and officials’ representatives in Ghana football will have to sign Integrity Declaration Forms.
