Kangwon Land to open second casino for South Koreans by 2028
Kangwon Land Inc., the company leading the project, has released new images of the under-construction structure in response to media requests. This development marks a significant milestone in the resort’s expansion, aiming to enhance its integrated resort offerings in the country.
According to GGRAsia, Kangwon Land, the only casino resort in South Korea open to local citizens, revealed architectural designs for its upcoming second casino building, which is now anticipated to open in early 2028. Initially, the completion was targeted for the end of 2027, but the company now clarifies that operations are expected to start in early 2028.
Design gets a dynamic makeover
The renderings show exteriors characterised by a distinctive ‘flying gable’ or ‘prow roof’—an architectural style that produces a dynamic, angular roofline. The design shows water fountains encircling the building, which reflect the structure’s geometric form and contribute to a tranquil yet contemporary aesthetic.
The structure will have five floors in total, including two basement levels and three above-ground levels. The interior visuals demonstrate a high vaulted ceiling above the gaming floor, fostering a spacious and airy environment for visitors.
The second casino will include both casino and non-casino zones, with the latter designated to accommodate food and beverage outlets, as well as other entertainment facilities.
According to the latest update, the new venue will also include 50 gaming tables and 250 electronic gaming machines to Kangwon Land’s existing operations. Upon commencement of operations, the entire resort will provide a total of 250 tables and 1,610 machines, representing a substantial increase in its gaming capacity.
The building itself will cover 18,430 square metres (approximately 198,379 square feet), making it a major addition to the current footprint of the resort.
Project authorised by Korea’s Ministry of Culture
This expansion project was authorised in principle by South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in September 2024, following an internal review and long-standing calls for broader infrastructure development at the resort. In December 2024, Kangwon Land Inc.’s board approved an investment of KRW 179.6 billion (€130 million at the time) for the construction of the new building.
Initial details shared during the investment approval indicated 5,748 square metres of “operational space,” which will include a larger casino floor, a shopping mall, a theatre, and more food and beverage options.
Kangwon Land is the only casino in South Korea that legally allows Korean citizens to enter. This unique status has made it the country’s most profitable casino by revenue. The opening of a second casino is anticipated to draw even more visitors from South Korea and abroad.
This development is part of a larger strategy to establish Kangwon Land as a premium integrated resort, offering a comprehensive range of gaming, retail, dining, and entertainment experiences.
Construction is underway, with an anticipated opening in early 2028. This project is a significant step in the resort’s ongoing development, aiming to blend modern architecture with enhanced leisure and gaming options for visitors.
