Tanzania and Kenya have strengthened regional cooperation in the lottery sector through a knowledge-sharing session focused on governance, regulation and oversight of national lottery operations.
The Gaming Board of Tanzania (GBT) hosted a delegation from Kenya’s National Lottery Board (NLB) in Dar es Salaam for discussions on regulatory frameworks, operational systems and best practices aimed at improving transparency and accountability in the lottery industry.
The session brought together senior representatives from both organisations and marked what the Gaming Board of Tanzania described as the first learning engagement of its kind between the two institutions.
The Tanzanian delegation was led by GBT Board Chairman Ambassador Modest Mero, while Kenya’s delegation was headed by National Lottery Board Chairperson Dr Farida Karoney.
Focus on governance and regulation
During the discussions, both parties exchanged experiences on the governance and regulation of national lottery operations. The meeting examined approaches used to oversee lottery activities and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
According to the Gaming Board of Tanzania, the engagement provided an opportunity to review regulatory structures and operational systems that support transparency, accountability and public confidence in lottery programmes.
The two organisations also discussed oversight mechanisms designed to strengthen integrity across lottery operations. The exchange covered practical measures used to manage regulatory responsibilities while maintaining public trust in lottery institutions.
Sharing best practices
A key objective of the visit was to learn from each other’s experiences and identify practices that could enhance lottery administration in both countries.
Officials explored a range of topics linked to the effective management of national lotteries. These included governance structures, operational procedures and regulatory approaches that support efficient and transparent lottery operations.
The discussions reflected a broader effort by regulators in the region to strengthen institutional capacity through collaboration and knowledge exchange. By sharing experiences, both organisations sought to improve their understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with managing national lottery systems.
Support for Kenya’s national lottery plans
Members of the Kenyan delegation said the discussions extended beyond governance and regulation to include several operational areas that are important for the future development of Kenya‘s national lottery.
Jackie Tonui, a member of the delegation, said the engagement covered governance, lottery operations, technology oversight, accountability frameworks, compliance measures and public benefit management.
Tonui noted that these areas are particularly important as Kenya continues preparations to operationalise its National Lottery.
The visit provided Kenyan officials with an opportunity to gain insight into regulatory and operational practices that could support the implementation and management of lottery activities in the country.
Regional cooperation in the lottery sector
The meeting highlighted the growing importance of regional cooperation among lottery regulators and stakeholders in East Africa.
Both organisations emphasised the value of institutional learning and collaboration in strengthening national lottery operations. Such engagements can help regulators improve oversight standards, share practical knowledge and support the development of effective governance frameworks.
The exchange also underscored the role of national lotteries in contributing to socio-economic development when supported by strong governance, operational integrity and effective regulatory oversight.
As Kenya advances its plans for a national lottery and Tanzania continues to oversee its gaming and lottery sectors, the discussions in Dar es Salaam demonstrated a shared commitment to strengthening regulatory standards and promoting responsible lottery operations across the region.
