Spanish football legend Luis García has played the beautiful game at the heart of some of the world’s most passionate fan bases, from Barcelona and Atlético Madrid to Liverpool. In an exclusive interview with SiGMA TV, García spoke about how betting platforms now engage supporters across different football cultures. García pointed to the sport’s shift into a connected, digital environment.
“We have become a very digital and very global world,” García said. “The connection between sports and these platforms is becoming more and more ingrained in people’s lives.”
For García, this relationship reflects how fans now consume football beyond the stadium. “We like to be enjoyed, we like to be linked,” he explained. “In the end, it is time that we spend enjoying our time and having a good time.”
He framed betting platforms as part of a broader entertainment ecosystem that has grown alongside football’s international reach, rather than something separate from it.
Where betting meets loyalty and emotion
Having represented clubs with millions of devoted supporters, García acknowledged that betting and fan passion sit close together and must be handled carefully.
“It is part of our job also to make people aware that this is right there, in front of us,” he said. “As soon as you can control it, as you can manage it.”
García stressed that betting cannot be ignored or removed from modern sport. “It is part of our life. It is not something that we can erase because it is going to be there forever,” he said. The responsibility, he argued, lies in how it is approached. “You have to control it and manage it. If you can do it responsibly, I think it is the best way to do it and enjoy it.”
For García, the message to fans is clear and consistent. “Do it responsibly,” he said. “Always.”
Lessons from the pitch: control and decision-making
Reflecting on his own playing career, García drew parallels between betting behaviour and tactical thinking in football. “Tactical decisions are always there,” García said. He recalled Champions League matches where “managing that kind of situation, a change into the system, was key to being successful”.
Understanding what is unfolding and responding calmly remains vital. “It is crucial that understanding what is happening in front of you and adapting to changes that you have to do is the way to be successful,” he added. The same principle, he implied, applies off the pitch when fans interact with betting products.
Football’s pull and the rise of esports betting
García also addressed how football’s popularity feeds into other markets, including esports betting. “Football in every single area keeps growing,” he said. “It is one of the biggest sports in the world, followed by millions and millions of fans.”
That audience, he said, has helped esports gain momentum. “Esport is something that, even though it introduced itself not long ago, has had massive growth,” García noted. Through his involvement with LaLiga’s eGames, he has seen how closely football and digital competition are linked.
Across his reflections, García returned to one theme: enjoyment paired with control. In a sport driven by emotion, he believes betting can coexist with fan passion, provided responsibility remains at the centre.
