SiGMA cuts energy consumption by a third to help lighten pressure on the summer grid
SiGMA – an events and media organisation serving the gambling and tech industries – has confirmed that it has taken the initiative to temporarily close the third floor of its Malta office in Balzan as part of a move to help ease pressure on the national electricity grid during peak summer months.
The two-month closure, running throughout July and August, is estimated to have significantly reduced the company’s monthly electricity consumption by approximately 33%.
The move comes as our country is faced with the effects of a sweltering summer heat wave, with record-breaking temperature rises contributing to increased demand for electricity and power outages that have led to outages that have affected both businesses and homes across the islands.
SiGMA said that the closure was designed to help reduce its energy consumption and support the government’s efforts to ease pressure on the national network during periods where unusually high temperatures are being experienced.
Group CEO Emily Micallef commented, saying, “We believe everyone has a responsibility to do their part. Even the smallest contribution can make a difference, and by reducing our energy consumption during peak summer months, in addition to reducing our load, we also hope to reinforce our commitment to a strong ESG strategy.”
The Meteorological Office confirmed that Malta experienced its hottest July day on record, with temperatures reaching an intense 43.3 °C – a figure that has surpassed 2023 numbers – where temperatures had hit 42.7 °C.
Last month was also the hottest June recorded in Western Europe, and the second hottest across Europe as a whole, with records revealing an almost a difference of almost two degrees above the 1991 – 2020 average. France, England, and Spain all hit the headlines for intense temperature climbs.
