Hong Kong-listed MGM China Holdings Ltd has been recognised for its sustainability performance for the fourth year running, with the casino operator included in the Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Benchmark Index. The company has also been selected as a constituent of the Hang Seng ESG 50 Index, which highlights the top 50 environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performers among around 500 listed firms.
According to MGM China, it earned an “A” rating in the latest sustainability assessment and remains the only integrated resort operator in Macau to appear on both indices. The company said the recognition reflects its ongoing strategic and impactful sustainability initiatives, underlining its focus on responsible business practices.
President Feng confirms announcement
MGM China runs two major properties in Macau: MGM Macau, located on the city’s peninsula, and MGM Cotai, situated in the Cotai district. Together, they form a significant part of Macau’s integrated resort sector, which relies on tourism, gaming, and entertainment.
In prepared remarks, Kenneth Feng Xiaofeng, president and executive director of MGM China, said the company is proud to have sustainability “embedded in its business DNA”. He described the recognition as affirming the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship, stakeholder well-being, and innovation, while signalling its intention to continue leading responsible growth in Macau and the Greater Bay Area.
“The inclusion in both indices for four consecutive years demonstrates that sustainability is not only a priority but a core part of our business strategy,” Feng added. “We will continue to build on this momentum to shape a more responsible and resilient future for the communities we serve.”
All about Hang Seng Index
For the unaware, the Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index Series, which includes both the benchmark and the ESG 50 Index, is designed to provide investors with an objective and reliable measure of sustainability performance. Companies are assessed annually on a set of seven key areas: corporate governance, human rights, labour practices, environmental management, fair operating practices, consumer issues, and community involvement and development.
Eligibility for the Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Benchmark Index is limited to the top 20 percent of securities issuers with the highest sustainability scores. Selection is conducted by invitation only each year, emphasising the competitive nature of the assessment and the level of commitment required for inclusion.
MGM China said that these repeated recognitions reinforce its broader commitment to responsible operations, ethical business conduct, and long-term environmental and social impact. The company has increasingly focused on initiatives such as energy efficiency, waste reduction, staff welfare, and community engagement, aligning its practices with global ESG standards.
Analysts noted that sustainability is becoming a key consideration for investors in the region, particularly in sectors such as gaming and hospitality, where environmental impact and social responsibility are closely scrutinised. MGM China’s continued presence on both indices positions it as a leader in ESG performance among Macau’s integrated resorts, setting a benchmark for competitors in the industry. By combining strong environmental policies, governance structures, and social initiatives, MGM China has signalled that sustainable development can go hand-in-hand with profitable operations, helping Macau maintain its reputation as a responsible global gaming destination.
