American Bitcoin: the new Trump family cryptocurrency, between volatility and industrial ambition
2025 has seen the official launch of American Bitcoin (ticker ABTC), the company founded by Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. Its Nasdaq debut was anything but ordinary: on its very first day of trading, the stock was halted five times due to excessive volatility. Shares surged by as much as 85%, peaking at around 14 dollars, before settling near 9.80 dollars. At the close, the price was still up a solid 16-17%.
This stop-start dynamic revealed much about the project’s nature. On one hand, it underscored speculative appetite for the crypto sector; on the other, it highlighted the fragility of an asset blending political symbolism with financial ambition. The “Trump brand” continues to command global attention, but the chaotic launch also raised questions about the stability of the business model.
The origins of American Bitcoin
The company was formally created in spring 2025, though its roots go back several months. The idea first took shape in late 2024, during an informal meeting at the Trump Golf Club in Jupiter, Florida, where Eric Trump and senior executives from Canadian mining giant Hut 8 discussed the potential for a strategic alliance in bitcoin mining.
From that exchange, the concept evolved into a structured venture: a company designed to combine industrial expertise with financial firepower. Officially incorporated on 1 April 2025, American Bitcoin was set up with a clear corporate structure: Hut 8 controls 80% of the capital, while the remaining 20% is owned by the Trump family and former partners from American Data Centres.
Eric Trump’s role
Beyond being a co-founder, Eric Trump holds a central strategic position. The surge in the company’s share price on its debut turned him into a billionaire overnight. Yet his role extends well beyond wealth accumulation: he is tasked with converting visibility and capital into investment opportunities. Leveraging his international network and the allure of the Trump name, Eric plays a pivotal role in driving investor interest.
An industrial business model
Unlike many crypto projects that ride the hype cycle, American Bitcoin is built on an industrial strategy with three integrated pillars.
The first is bitcoin mining itself, carried out in facilities located in regions with competitively priced energy. Mining is notoriously capital-intensive, requiring vast resources to maintain infrastructure, security and efficiency. The second is building a strategic reserve of bitcoin. This dual approach positions the company not only as a producer but also as a custodian of the digital asset, often referred to as “digital gold”. Finally, the third pillar is expansion: a plan to diversify into broader bitcoin-related sectors with the aim of establishing a resilient platform.
From an operational perspective, the company already commands an energy capacity exceeding one gigawatt and controls a vast fleet of ASIC machines, the backbone of crypto mining. This technological base gives it a competitive edge over many single-focus firms in the sector.
Rapid growth in numbers
Within its first quarter of activity, American Bitcoin had already mined 215 bitcoin. According to a filing with the SEC in September 2025, the company now holds 2,443 bitcoin, with an estimated value of around 269 million dollars. These figures reflect an accelerated growth trajectory powered by a blend of industrial solidity and political visibility.
Context also matters: in May, the US president signed an executive order to promote nuclear energy expansion, a move that could provide significant benefits for data centres and, by extension, crypto mining operations.
Standing apart from meme coins and stablecoins
The venture differs markedly from the wave of meme coins and politically branded stablecoins, often launched as image-building exercises. These tokens, frequently short-lived, tend to rely on hype rather than on tangible infrastructure or economic sustainability.
American Bitcoin, by contrast, presents itself as a structured operation: physical plants, energy resources, skilled staff, logistics and advanced infrastructure. While still subject to crypto market volatility, its model more closely resembles that of major industrial corporations than of speculative tokens.
Politics and business: an inevitable intersection
Despite Eric Trump dismissing accusations of conflict of interest as “crazy”, the political dimension is unavoidable. The Trump family already has a history of crypto ventures, including a meme coin, a stablecoin, and a substantial 2.5 billion dollar bitcoin treasury investment for Trump Media & Technology Group.
American Bitcoin builds on this track record, reinforcing the Trumps’ foothold in the emerging financial ecosystem. Mining, often regarded as the less glamorous side of crypto, is thus recast as a symbolic and political project as well as an industrial one.
A future balanced between ambition and uncertainty
The fate of American Bitcoin rests on a delicate balance. On the one hand, the company can boast an imposing industrial structure, an integrated business model and strong political backing. On the other hand, it must contend with the sector’s inherent volatility and the risk of being perceived as a political instrument rather than a purely financial enterprise.
It is in this grey zone—between industrial ambition and political spectacle—that the future of American Bitcoin will be decided. The initiative could cement the Trump family as major global players in crypto, or it could remain a symbolic experiment, echoing—albeit on a different scale—the boom-and-bust cycle of meme coins.
