The Botswana Gambling Authority views horse racing as a key avenue in boosting tourism. Recently, the Authority participated in the Easter Masa Horse Racing event. As a premier event, the race showed talent, discipline, and competitiveness in Botswana’s horse racing industry. It also demonstrated how structured racing events can play a critical role in helping achieve economic development.
Government support drives sector success
It took place on 4 April and received significant attention from the Government. In fact, Botswana’s Minister of Sports and Arts, Jacob Kelebeng, came to appreciate the organisers’ efforts. Kelebeng stressed, “Horse racing has the potential to become a vital catalyst for sport tourism and sustainable rural economic development.” This acknowledgment clearly demonstrates the view that horse racing can grow into a sector for structured economic development.
Cross-border participation boosts competitive edge
The horse racing event took place in the Masa Racing Park located in the Samedupi area. The participants included not only locals from Botswana but also attendees from South Africa and Namibia.
This race had many categories to make it more competitively diverse for all participants. Cross-border involvement helps Botswana position itself as a horse racing destination for international competitors. Besides, it helps local businesses, accommodation service providers, and local transport services capitalise on demand.
Regulator focused on structure and integrity
The Botswana Gambling Authority sees itself not only as a regulating body, but also as a driver of growth within proper regulatory limits. This stance shows its willingness to help build a sustainable horse racing industry.
Its participation in such racing events demonstrates its focus on developing horse racing through strict integrity and compliance policies to facilitate further investment.
Responsible gambling remains central
As the horse racing industry grows, there is an expectation that betting volume will increase. Hence, the Botswana Gambling Authority emphasised that responsible gambling was a top priority for the growth of the horse racing industry. In fact, it is necessary to find a balance between the growth of the horse racing industry and responsible gambling.
Revenue surge signals broader industry opportunity
Botswana’s gambling sector is experiencing financial growth, reinforcing confidence in emerging verticals like horse racing. Recent projections show the industry is on track to surpass P1bn ($91.3m) in gross gambling revenue (GGR).
This potential milestone reflects sustained expansion across both land-based and online betting markets. The country’s revenue already exceeded P700m ($64.34m) in December 2025, highlighting strong momentum within the sector.
As the industry scales, sectors like horse racing stand to benefit from increased visibility and investment. This alignment strengthens the case for racing as both a sporting and economic asset within Botswana’s evolving gambling ecosystem.
A sector poised for expansion
Botswana’s horse racing industry is slowly entering the spotlight as a multi-dimensional economic driver.
With government backing, regional participation, and regulatory oversight, the sector shows clear upward momentum. Events like the Easter Masa Horse Racing meeting offer more than sport. They present a pathway toward tourism growth, rural development, and a more diversified national economy.
