Botswana regulator announces list of licensed betting operators
The Botswana Gambling Authority published an updated list of licensed gambling operators authorised to operate in the country and issued a public warning against the use of unlicensed betting websites. The regulator urged consumers to use only approved operators that comply with Botswana’s gambling laws and regulatory requirements.
Officials warned that unlicensed platforms may expose users to fraud, unfair gaming practices, and financial risks because of a lack of regulatory oversight. The update comes as Botswana continues to develop its regulated gaming market, with authorities also advancing plans for the country’s national lottery and broader gambling industry reforms.
Licensed betting operators
Botswana’s Gambling Authority has confirmed that only six betting operators are currently licensed to operate in the country. These authorised operators are:
- Sunbet Botswana (Pty) Ltd trading as Sunbet
- PstBet Botswana (Pty) Ltd as PstBet
- Mecaville Enterprises (Pty) Ltd as Bet267
- Delta Bay (Pty) Ltd as Betway Botswana
- SNB Investments (Botswana) (Pty) Ltd as BBets
- Direct Wholesale (Pty) Ltd as BetXplosion
Online and retail betting presence
Botswana’s betting services are offered both online and offline, in accordance with the Gambling Act. This is done to ensure that businesses run smoothly and successfully, that consumers are not mistreated, and that money is kept safe. Many betting service providers understand that customers want options, which is why many organisations have developed such an arrangement that works both ways.
Licensing requirements are critical to protecting players. When betting companies obtain a licence, they must follow tight rules and procedures to verify that they are functioning honestly. These regulations also compel them to have safeguards in place to prevent fraud and money laundering. As a consumer, this provides significant benefits. Such websites may appear appealing with their offers of bonuses or favourable odds, but they provide no protection, placing the user at risk of losing all of their deposits. The withdrawal process is hampered, and customer service may not even exist on some websites. In rare circumstances, there may be outright scams designed to take people’s money without providing any payment.
Aside from economic and security concerns, many unregulated websites lack fundamental consumer protection features. Licensed operators are supervised to ensure fair play and transparency, whereas unlicensed sites may be able to manipulate odds, modify the terms of the game, or fail to pay up. Players who have grievances against such companies will have no way to resolve them.
Initiative on problem gambling
Early detection of problem gambling is critical to responsible gaming. Overspending, gambling with borrowed funds, neglecting one’s duties and responsibilities, or feeling stressed because of gambling are all potential warning signs. The regulatory authorities of Botswana have focused on minimising gambling risks, with national initiatives having shown promising results.
The Gambling Authority aspires to have a better understanding of problem gambling in the community. They want to know how people gamble, how much they spend, and whether symptoms indicate someone is developing an addiction. To obtain this information, they have issued a call for citizen-owned firms to assist with the research. To bid on this project, use the tender number GA 3/1/5-I 001/2026-2027, and submit by 24 June 2026. There is a price for accessing the entire tender materials, however youth-owned enterprises will receive a discount.
Gathering evidence is essential in order to strengthen the responsible gambling plan, improve licensing procedures, and provide support to those in most need. This is especially true in a country where gambling is an important part of the entertainment industry.
National lottery set for revival
Botswana’s gambling industry is gearing up for the relaunch of the National Lottery after years of uncertainty. The acting CEO of the National Lottery, Mr Moruntshi Kemorwale, stated that negotiations are taking place with a selected local partner who will have the ten-year operating licence. The negotiations are expected to be completed within a few months, allowing the lottery to be relaunched this year.
Lotteries have an even greater impact than only delivering prizes to winners. They also assist in raising revenue for shared initiatives. This is what the Botswana government hopes to achieve with its future lottery. It strives to raise revenue for athletic events, culture, charities, and various community development projects. These are areas that have received very little financing in recent years, and the lottery can assist in replenishing some of these critical resources.
