Following a policy update that came into effect on 4 May 2026, Google Ads now allows online gambling advertising in Alberta, Canada. This change aligns with Alberta’s upcoming regulated iGaming market launch, scheduled for 13 July 2026, and is governed by the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC).
Licensed operators may now run gambling advertisements targeting Alberta residents, provided they adhere to player protection restrictions and provincial compliance requirements. Key operators, including BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings and Rush Street Interactive, have confirmed launches for summer 2026 and have successfully completed responsible gambling certification through the Responsible Gambling Council (RGC).
Alberta’s transition to a regulated iGaming market
Alberta is set to become the second Canadian province, after Ontario, to open its regulated online gambling market to private operators. According to recent provincial government surveys cited by the AGLC, unlicensed offshore platforms currently account for approximately 70 per cent of online gambling traffic in the province. The regulated market is scheduled to launch on 13 July 2026, when the state-owned PlayAlberta platform’s monopoly ends.
Google Ads updated its gambling and games policy in response to this regulatory shift. Previously, online gambling advertising in Canada was tightly restricted: lotteries were permitted only for state-owned or federally licensed operators; sports betting, online casino and daily fantasy sports advertisements were allowed only for operators holding a provincial licence and targeting Alberta exclusively. The updated policy broadens these permissions while introducing transitional rules, as set out on the AGLC website.
Permitted products and certification requirements
Under the updated policy, the following online gambling categories may be advertised in Alberta:
| Product | Certification requirement |
| Lotteries | State-owned operators or those licensed by federal authorities in Canada only |
| Sports betting | AGLC licence; targeting restricted to Alberta |
| Online casino | AGLC licence; proof of licence application required for pre-launch campaigns |
| Daily fantasy sports (where a licence is available) | Provincial licence; targeting restricted to Alberta |

Transitional period conditions
Until 13 July 2026, when PlayAlberta’s monopoly ends and the regulated market officially opens, operators running Google Ads campaigns in Alberta must comply with the following transitional restrictions:
- Only brand awareness campaigns are permitted. Promotional activity, including bonus offers, remains prohibited until the market officially launches.
- Geo-targeting is mandatory: advertisements may only target users located in Alberta.
- Pre-launch campaigns require proof of submission of an AGLC licence application.
Following the market launch, the standard Google Ads certification requirements will take effect. The process entails submitting licence documentation or proof of a pending application, confirming compliance with responsible advertising practices, and prohibiting targeting of minors. Affiliate and aggregator sites are permitted to advertise, provided they do not offer gambling services directly and link only to licensed operators. Policy violations will result in account suspension.
AGLC’s three-stage registration process
Earlier this year, the AGLC introduced a three-stage registration process for operators and service providers, as published on the AGLC website:
Stage 1 – Due Diligence: Assessment of regulatory compliance. Operators must contact the iGaming division to determine the appropriate registration category: either iGaming Operator or Supplier.
Stage 2 – Compliance: Submission of required documentation, including financial statements, anti-money laundering policies, and integration with the province-wide self-exclusion programme.
Stage 3 – Commercial agreement with Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC): AiGC is responsible for AML oversight, financial reporting, complaints handling and ongoing monitoring.
Operators are required to integrate responsible gambling tools, including deposit limits, time-outs, self-exclusion, and activity statements. Advertising must not feature athletes or target young people, and all materials must carry the AGLC logo.
The latest Google Ads update signals that Alberta is preparing for a competitive regulated market. On 13th July, the market will be very busy, but strict rules will also be in place to maintain stability. If operators fail to comply, they could be assigned offshore status. For advertisers, this presents an opportunity to capture market share ahead of launch.
