In the words of Henry Ross, Africa’s iGaming industry is experiencing a defining moment. Rapid digital expansion, a growing young population, and an increasingly supportive regulatory environment have positioned the continent as the next major frontier for global gaming innovation. Among the companies taking a lead in shaping this growth is Optimove, a global leader in Relationship Marketing Software as a Service (SaaS).
Somewhere at the centre of this movement is Henry Ross, Account Executive at Optimove, whose passion for Africa’s potential and deep industry insights have made him a voice in driving the continent’s iGaming growth. Speaking in a detailed conversation with SiGMA News, Ross discussed Optimove’s African journey, the insights gained from its first African iGaming Roadshow in Cape Town, and the future of player engagement and growth across the region.
What follows is an in-depth Q&A with Henry Ross on Optimove’s commitment to helping Africa’s operators scale responsibly, embrace data-driven marketing, and build long-term player relationships.
Africa’s moment in the iGaming spotlight
Optimove’s debut African iGaming Roadshow marked a milestone in the continent’s gaming evolution. Henry Ross shared why Cape Town was the ideal launchpad for the initiative and how Optimove aims to support Africa’s rapidly expanding, yet underserved, iGaming market.
SiGMA: What inspired Optimove to host its first African iGaming Roadshow, and why was Cape Town chosen as the launch destination?
Ross: Optimove has been instrumental in the success of operators around the world, and we see it as our responsibility to help new markets develop in a sustainable way. Africa stands primed for rapid expansion, yet many have drastically underserved the continent compared to other regions. When the opportunity came to focus on this market, I jumped at it; beyond the personal and family connections I have there, the opportunity is enormous. We have the resources and expertise to help operators there take advantage of the conditions driving this expansion. Hosting our first African Roadshow was a natural way to start giving this community the attention it deserves, and we’re already planning more initiatives across the continent.
In terms of location, Cape Town was an obvious choice. It’s a stunning city with a vibrant and growing iGaming ecosystem, with many of our clients based here. Legends like Moshe and Ashley Adir of Vegas Kings call it home. It’s a natural hub where people can fly in from around the continent, and venues like The One & Only Hotel and Beau Constantia brought the perfect mix of beauty, professionalism, and atmosphere for such a landmark event. I didn’t think it would be too tough a sell to get people to come, and thankfully it wasn’t!
The formula for scaling African operators
Henry Ross discussed the evolving paths for start-ups and established operators, outlining how both can scale intelligently through data, creativity, and innovation. He shared three key strategies that resonated strongly across Africa’s growing iGaming community.
SiGMA: During the Roadshow, you highlighted growth for both start-ups and established operators. What key insights emerged on how each can scale intelligently?
Ross: We shared three main perspectives that resonated across both groups.
First, leverage insights and benchmarking, and lean on experts. Being truly data-led in CRM is hard, especially in a market that hasn’t had the same level of infrastructure or attention as others. Optimove provides operators with a unique data perspective, helping established brands uncover margin and growth opportunities and helping start-ups measure progress not just against themselves, but against the competition. Peter from YesPlay summed it up perfectly when he said, “Even if you’re not a CRM expert yet, the right tool might naturally guide you toward doing things the right way.”
Second, adopt a challenger mindset. Start-ups can’t compete on marketing spend, but they can win on player experience. Build a fortress in your players’ minds by being present in real time, across multiple touchpoints; across mobile, web, in-app, and beyond. YesPlay does this brilliantly. Emerging operators shouldn’t try to outspend the big guys on taxis and airports, outsmart them with seamless, data-driven engagement.
Established operators should stay wary of success breeding complacency. Use your brand strength to deepen loyalty, invest in testing and analytics, and resist an overreliance on acquisition. As Steve Jobs said, “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.” It’s always a bit of an arms race in iGaming; the pace of change in this market will lead to winners and losers. Even if you’re in the lead now, if you slow down or stop, you risk coming last eventually.
Third, this is all supposed to be fun, so embrace fun and differentiation through gamification. As bonusing becomes less effective, introducing playful, gamified experiences, even in something as simple as a registration flow, can dramatically increase engagement and conversion. Mature markets already set the standard, and players here will soon expect the same.
Key roadshow takeaways
The Roadshow brought together some of iGaming’s most influential voices, sparking lively debate and powerful insights on marketing, creativity, and regulation. From innovative CRM strategies to navigating compliance challenges, the discussions captured Africa’s growing confidence and collaborative spirit in shaping its iGaming future.
SiGMA: With partners like Vegas Kings and speakers from YesPlay and other industry leaders, what were the most impactful takeaways from the discussions?
Ross: The energy in the room was incredible. Vegas Kings brought years of creative excellence to the table, and Catie Di Stefano, an iGaming icon, delivered a fantastic session on the power of CRM in driving engagement.
YesPlay was generous in sharing their story and highlighting how Optimove has helped them grow; they’ve become some of our ‘power users’ and true leaders in what we call the Positionless Marketing movement.
Gail Odgers from Virgin Bet challenged everyone to rethink how they segment players and find value in unexpected places.
And Garron Whitesman’s regulatory talk was captivating; you could hear a pin drop. It reminded everyone that upcoming regulations remain uncertain and highlighted the importance of being prepared. Maybe the leaders in the room also know Garron’s a valuable, and potentially costly, resource, and they knew to get their questions in then and there!
What Optimove is doing for African operators
Optimove’s Relationship Marketing SaaS empowers African iGaming operators to build stronger, data-driven, and personalized engagement strategies. Henry Ross explains how its three core powers transform player relationships.
SiGMA: How does Optimove’s Relationship Marketing SaaS help iGaming operators in Africa build stronger, more customer-led engagement strategies?
Ross: We start with Data Power. This is about truly understanding your players. Optimove connects every data point from deposits and bets to in-game activity and engagement, creating a complete, unified view of the player. That single customer view means you can identify patterns that were previously invisible: who’s about to churn, who’s likely to convert, and who deserves VIP treatment. For African operators, where data often sits in silos across platforms, this is transformative.
Second, Creative Power. Operators can engage players anywhere, through any channel, using AI-assisted content generation that tailors each message to the player’s individual preferences. Instead of generic offers, you’re delivering gamified and personalised content that resonates on a 1:1 level. This keeps campaigns fresh, scalable, and highly efficient – no need for massive teams or endless manual work.
Third, Optimisation Power. Enable AI agents to continuously test, learn, and improve campaigns in real time. Operators can see which offers perform best, which segments respond fastest, and which channels deliver the highest ROI, all without guesswork. It’s constant improvement, powered by data, not intuition.
Together, these three powers form the foundation of the Positionless Marketing movement. It’s a philosophy that enables lean teams to compete with the biggest brands and lets established operators scale responsibly without sacrificing personalisation. The result is stronger, longer-lasting relationships with players, better margins, and ultimately, more predictable growth.
Adaptability best suited for Africa
Optimove is tailoring its global expertise to Africa’s unique iGaming landscape, combining local insights, regulatory know-how, and strategic partnerships to drive growth across emerging markets.
SiGMA: How is Optimove adapting its global expertise to meet the unique regulatory, cultural, and market dynamics of Africa’s iGaming landscape?
Ross: We’re combining local perspective with global experience. Our data foundation gives us an unparalleled understanding of player behaviour, which is why we can provide the benchmarks my colleague Punal Shah presented. This strong foundation also enables us to create tailored packages like the Optimove Ignite+ Program, specifically for emerging markets across Africa.
But it’s not just our products and solutions, it’s our people. Regulation here is evolving quickly, and we’ve consistently helped operators in other markets navigate similar shifts. We did it during the Netherlands’ regulatory transformation in the last couple of years, and in other hyper-regulated environments like Belgium, Germany, and many more.
First movers have also trusted us in new verticals, such as Stake in crypto and several leaders in the U.S. sweepstakes boom. Optimove has backed me to lead the next wave of growth for emerging markets because we believe Africa will follow a similar explosive trajectory.
We’re also partnering with the best local consultants and agencies who live and breathe this market. These relationships are how we keep our ear to the ground, and in working with credible and experienced people like Vegas Kings, Warrior Lab, and many more, we boost our own credibility. You are the company you keep.
CRM, player loyalty & lifetime
Customer retention is critical in iGaming, especially in emerging markets. Henry Ross explains how data-driven CRM can transform loyalty and maximize player lifetime value.
SiGMA: Customer retention remains a top priority in iGaming. How can data-driven CRM strategies redefine player loyalty and lifetime value in emerging markets?
Ross: Simply put, what once worked won’t always work in the future. Make no assumptions. For this market in particular, retention is the new acquisition, especially as player value and acquisition costs evolve. Data-driven CRM changes the game by turning every player interaction into a learning opportunity. With Optimove, operators can identify high-value segments, predict churn, and act before it happens.
The key is personalisation and testing at scale. Sending the right message, through the right channel, at the right time. That builds loyalty far faster than bonuses ever could. Emerging markets like those in Africa have an added advantage: they can skip legacy systems and start fresh with modern, AI-powered CRM strategies. That means quicker insights, faster optimisation, and stronger long-term relationships. It’s about creating emotional loyalty, not just transactional loyalty.
Luckily, during the event, I wasn’t even the first to point this out; it came from comments in the room.
Africa’s future from Henry Ross’ perspective
Henry Ross highlights the key trends shaping Africa’s iGaming future, from shifting player behaviour and regulatory changes to the rise of homegrown operators. He also outlines Optimove’s plans to expand partnerships and support data-driven growth across the continent.
SiGMA: What opportunities do you see shaping the future of iGaming in Africa over the next three to five years?
Ross: Several big forces are shaping the next chapter in Africa. Regulation will play a defining role; in some countries, progress will depend on how political decision-making evolves, as highlighted by Garron’s talk. Challenger brands will continue to disrupt the status quo, especially in South Africa and Nigeria, while established operators will compete fiercely to defend their share.
Player behaviour is also shifting. The next generation of players is younger, mobile-first, and expects instant, personalised experiences. Add in improving economic stability and growing connectivity, and you have the ingredients for one of the most exciting growth stories in global iGaming.
My bold prediction: within five years, at least one African ‘homegrown’ operator will be competing on a global stage, not just regionally. We’ll see a ‘homegrown’ brand become a household name internationally, powered by data-led CRM, local creativity, and a challenger mindset. The innovation coming out of this continent is too strong to stay contained.
What’s next for Optimove?
Following the success of its first African Roadshow, Henry Ross says Optimove is set to expand across the continent, strengthening partnerships and supporting operators with data-led strategies.
SiGMA: After hosting the first African Roadshow, what are Optimove’s next steps in strengthening partnerships and expanding its footprint across the continent?
Ross: The Cape Town event was just the beginning. We’re doubling down with our second appearance at SiGMA Africa in August, followed by a series of planned trips to Johannesburg in the new year to meet partners and clients on the ground. We’ll also return to Cape Town in 2026 for our second African Optimove Roadshow.
Beyond South Africa, we’re expanding our footprint across Kenya, Nigeria, Zambia, and Tanzania, working with both start-ups and established brands to help them build smarter, data-led marketing strategies.
The momentum is real, we’ve planted our flag, and we’re here for the long term.
Africa’s iGaming future is bright
The optimism expressed by Henry Ross about Africa’s iGaming market is nothing but the real current state of things; this continent is no longer on the fringes of innovation in the digital space. With companies such as Optimove emphasising engagement and sustainable scaling, Africa’s gaming market is poised for a new dawn on the global stage.
Africa’s young demographic, internet-savvy crowd, and evolving regulatory regimes make for a conducive environment for growth. Africa’s future giant in iGaming will not only hold up in Africa but will stand out in global rankings, much like what Ross predicted.
