Kalshi makes Canada debut with Wealthsimple partnership

Online brokerage Wealthsimple is set to bring prediction market trading to Canada through a new platform that will give users access to contracts powered by Kalshi, marking a significant step forward for the growing prediction market industry.

The Toronto-based financial services company has announced plans to launch Wealthsimple Predict, a new app that will allow Canadian retail investors to participate in event-based markets tied to economic, financial and climate-related outcomes. The offering will be powered by Kalshi, one of the largest prediction market operators in the United States.

The development effectively gives Kalshi a formal pathway into Canada, a market that has historically remained outside the company’s reach due to regulatory considerations.

4,000 different contracts now available

According to Wealthsimple, the new product is being introduced in response to growing customer interest in alternative ways to engage with financial and real-world events. The company said users will be able to access roughly 4,000 different contracts through the platform.

Prediction markets allow participants to trade on the likelihood of future events occurring. Contracts can be linked to a wide range of topics, from inflation data and interest rate decisions to elections, climate developments and major economic indicators.

For now, Wealthsimple has focused its announcement on economic, financial and climate-related markets. Notably absent were sports-related contracts, which have become one of the most active categories on Kalshi’s US platform.

The move is significant because Kalshi has traditionally treated Canada as a restricted jurisdiction. When the company expanded into more than 140 additional countries following its major fundraising round in 2025, Canada was left off the list. Industry observers largely attributed that decision to Canada’s regulatory framework around short-term binary options and event-based financial products.

And so, Wealthsimple’s partnership will create an alternative route for bringing prediction markets to Canadian consumers without requiring direct access to Kalshi’s primary platform. The announcement comes as prediction markets continue to attract increasing global attention. Supporters argue that these markets provide useful forecasting tools by allowing participants to assign probabilities to real-world outcomes.

Critics, however, maintain that many event contracts closely resemble gambling products and should be regulated accordingly. Kalshi found itself at the centre of that debate in 2024 when it fought a high-profile legal battle with the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). The regulator had attempted to prevent the company from listing election-related contracts, but Kalshi ultimately prevailed in court. The decision allowed the platform to keep its political markets online and brought it into the spotlight just weeks before the US presidential election.

Strong growth in activity

Since then, the company has reported strong growth in activity and user engagement. Kalshi executives have argued that the platform serves as more than just a trading venue, positioning it as a source of information and market-based forecasting.

Company representatives have previously stated that a large share of visitors use Kalshi to monitor probabilities and public sentiment rather than actively place trades. For Wealthsimple, the launch adds another product to a platform that already serves around four million Canadians and manages approximately CAD 125 billion ($91 billion) in assets.

The launch also marks another sign of how quickly prediction markets are spreading beyond the US. With Canada now opening the door to the sector through Wealthsimple, regulators, investors and industry observers will surely see how demand develops and whether similar products gain broader acceptance in other international markets.
