Liberia has taken an essential step towards modernising its online gaming regulations by formally authorising prediction markets within its national regulations. This move is an important step towards its overall strategy of establishing itself as an important player in the digital wagering industry.

It has been stated that the National Lottery Authority will regulate these activities within the existing Liberian International Gaming License framework. This decree will help integrate new forms of online gaming with existing regulations.

Clear regulations for prediction markets

The prediction markets are now formally authorised by the National Lottery Authority (NLA) under the Liberian International Gaming License. These operate on an equivalent footing with other similar online gaming platforms such as Polymarket. This step has removed any confusion that may arise with regards to new forms of event-based and outcome-driven wagering services.

The regulations will support prediction-based betting models for both B2C and B2B businesses. It will help companies to operate with both individual consumers and businesses within a single regulated environment. It will also encourage technology suppliers, aggregators, and platform providers to enter this market alongside retail operators. The overall move by the NLA is clear: prediction markets are not considered an experimental or informal form of online gaming. They are formal betting options that operate with similar regulations as other forms of online gaming.

Access to finance and operational support

A major challenge that has been experienced by prediction platforms has been a lack of access to banking services. Liberia has addressed this by including provisions that promote financial connectivity within its regulations. This accessibility means that a licensed operator will be able to acquire a financial services provider within the approved regulatory structure. This is important, especially when it comes to ensuring that there is a level of trust with customers, as well as reducing any inconvenience that may come up when international entities are looking to partner with stable entities within African nations.

This action by the NLA will ensure that there is a level of transparency when it comes to payment systems, which will improve standards compared to unlicensed platforms. This move has been seen as a positive step by those in the gaming sector, as it shows a level of innovation while still ensuring that there are checks in place regarding financial services.

The activity has been given legal backing through signed legal opinions from leading industry providers and technology suppliers. This backing ensures that there is a level of confidence within the industry, as a licensed operator will be able to ensure that there is a level of assurance regarding the fact that the activity is based on a firm legal footing. It will also ensure that there is a level of quality when it comes to products, as technology providers will be more inclined to partner with entities that are regulated, rather than those on the fringes who are not capable of meeting legal standards. This will ensure that there is a level of integrity when it comes to gaming products, which will improve standards across the board.

This move is a positive step for Liberia, mainly because it shows a willingness by the country to compete with other nations that already offer a level of innovation when it comes to gaming activities, such as prediction markets. This move by Liberia will ensure that there is a level of diversity when it comes to gaming products, especially as prediction markets are gaining popularity across the globe.
