Pascua Yaqui tribe set to open new Arizona casino in November
The Pascua Yaqui Tribe has confirmed to open its third casino in southern Arizona, with construction of the new Casino Del Sol Vahi Taa’am entering its final stages ahead of a planned November opening.
Located in Tucson, the new property is scheduled to welcome its first visitors on 15 November 2026. The development marks a major milestone for the tribe after more than a decade of efforts to bring the project to life.
The casino will feature around 4,830 square metres of gaming space and will house more than 900 slot machines. Plans also include high-limit gaming areas, a dedicated sports betting lounge, and several dining options.
For the Pascua Yaqui Tribe, the opening represents a big win after a lengthy legal and regulatory process. The tribe purchased the site in 2011, when it was home to Arizona’s once-largest drive-in movie theatre. However, years of legal hurdles delayed efforts to incorporate the land into the reservation and move forward with development.
Third casino after new act
Progress accelerated in late 2022 when the administration of former US President Joe Biden approved the Old Pascua Community Land Acquisition Act. The legislation expanded the Pascua Yaqui reservation by more than 121,000 square metres and cleared the path for the new casino project.
Construction officially began in January 2025. While the casino was originally expected to open on 11 November, the tribe later adjusted the launch date to 15 November. Tribal leaders have previously described the project as an important economic development opportunity. Former Casino Del Sol Chief Executive Officer Kim Van Amburg called the development a “game-changer” for the tribe, highlighting its potential to generate jobs and stimulate local growth.
The tribe estimates the new property will create between 500 and 600 jobs for residents in the Tucson area. The opening also comes at a time when tribal gaming continues to play an increasingly important role in Arizona’s economy.

Traditional role of tribal groups
According to figures from the Arizona Department of Gaming, tribal gaming operations have contributed approximately $2.5 billion to the state since 2004. Contributions from tribal casinos reached $46.23 million during the first quarter of 2026, showing a five percent increase compared with the same period a year earlier.
The expansion of gambling in Arizona has also prompted concerns from responsible gambling advocates. Since the state legalised sports betting in 2021, wagering activity has grown rapidly, placing Arizona among the leading states for sports betting participation.
State officials estimate that nearly three percent of Arizona adults may be at risk of developing gambling-related problems, while around one percent are believed to suffer from severe gambling disorders.
Arizona regulators have also recently entered the debate surrounding prediction market platforms such as Kalshi and Polymarket. State officials argue that these products carry many of the same risks as traditional gambling and should be subject to state-level oversight. But for now, attention is on Tucson, where the Pascua Yaqui Tribe is counting down the final months before opening the doors to its newest casino property.
