The SiGMA Foundation is proud to announce the successful completion of its staff Camino de Santiago adventure expedition, a transformative journey that saw employees from the SiGMA Malta office take on the iconic Camino de Santiago, one of the world’s most historic and spiritually significant treks.

Organised in collaboration with iGaming Academy (IGA) and supported by MedTech World, the trek took place this past September and spanned 120km, challenging participants both physically and mentally as they made their way through breathtaking landscapes, ancient villages and centuries-old pilgrim paths.

This initiative represented a return to the SiGMA Foundation’s core values of unity, purpose and compassion. It brought staff together outside the workplace, creating an opportunity for personal growth while directly connecting them to the Foundation’s humanitarian mission. Each participant played an active role in raising funds for the Foundation’s education projects in Uganda, helping to improve access to safe, high-quality learning environments for children in the community.

By stepping beyond their daily roles and comfort zones, SiGMA employees became ambassadors of change, embodying the Foundation’s belief that real impact begins with action. Through teamwork, endurance and a shared sense of purpose, the Camino experience became both a personal journey of discovery and a collective stride toward a brighter future for the communities SiGMA serves.

Trekking for change

In preparation for the expedition, the SiGMA team undertook a series of intensive training sessions and launched a variety of fundraising initiatives to support the Uganda projects. These projects focus on enhancing early childhood education and fostering community development, including the construction of a kindergarten in Kasese, new classrooms and improved sanitation and kitchen facilities. By providing sustainable, quality education and creating local jobs, these initiatives aim to have a lasting positive impact on the community. The fundraising journey continues, with ongoing campaigns ensuring sustained support for the infrastructure projects that will make a lasting impact in Uganda.

This journey united employees around a shared purpose, fostering teamwork, creativity and commitment while generating crucial funds. Taking on the challenge required staff to push beyond their comfort zones, physically by navigating the demanding Camino trek and mentally by spearheading inventive fundraising activities such as bingo nights, car washes and office thrift sales.

Through this combination of endurance and ingenuity, the team raised essential funds while strengthening a culture of collaboration, compassion and lasting impact that will continue to benefit the Uganda community for years to come.

Voices from the journey

The Camino expedition was an opportunity to make a real difference. Team members shared their reflections on the experience, highlighting both the effort involved and the purpose behind it.

Marina from SiGMA shared what the trek meant to her and the communities the SIGMA Foundation serves, “The journey of the Camino expedition is a challenge that tests your limits in many ways. Being part of such an incredible experience can be challenging, from the Bingo Night achieving a fundraising amount of EUR1,000 to walking the Camino raising an additional EUR300 funds. But every step reminds us why this matters: to give children the chance to learn, grow, and create a brighter future. Join the SiGMA Foundation in making a difference, and be the change you want to see.”

Alison from IGA shared her thoughts on the importance of these initiatives, “In the lead-up to this week’s Camino de Santiago trek, we’ve been busy fundraising for a fantastic cause- supporting the development of a kindergarten school in Uganda. From a fantastic community car wash in Sliema to an office thrift sale featuring generously donated and recycled clothing, we’ve rallied friends, family and colleagues, to make a difference. Thanks to everyone’s incredible support, we’ve already raised over €1,600!”

Shirley from the SiGMA team shared her personal thoughts on the journey, “My camino experience is complex, and one I am still unpacking weeks after I stored away my camino trekking sticks. Both wonderful and daunting. One of the highlights was sharing a life-changing experience with colleagues, for the SiGMA Foundation. I still cannot believe I managed to walk over 110km in 5 days. It provided me time to reflect, be closer to nature, and see beauty everywhere. My camino was “a paso de tortuga”, slow, and unforgettable.”

This captures the heart of the expedition. A journey that blends personal challenge with collective purpose. From creative fundraising events to the physical demands of the Camino, every effort contributes to supporting education and community development in Uganda, ensuring a brighter future for children and inspiring all who take part.

Walking to the future

The SiGMA staff Camino de Santiago Adventure Expedition represents far more than a team-building experience. It embodies the SiGMA Foundation’s ethos, that when communities and industries unite, they can create lasting, positive impact. For the employees involved, the trek was a powerful reminder that the Foundation’s mission is not just a concept but a lived reality, where personal challenge meets meaningful contribution. Each step along the Camino mirrored the journey of the communities they are supporting, highlighting the dedication, resilience and hope that drive the SiGMA Foundation’s projects.

This adventure is just one example of how collective effort can bring tangible change, from raising essential funds to fostering community development initiatives in Uganda and across the globe. The SiGMA Foundation continues to welcome participation, whether through future fundraising events, volunteering or supporting ongoing projects.
