At SiGMA Euro-Med 2025, Mark Berkovich, CEO of Kea, sat down in the SiGMA Lounge to discuss the challenges and opportunities in fintech, the rise of integrated platforms and how regulation and trust are shaping the industry’s future. He also reflected on the role of regulation and customer trust, highlighting how these factors are shaping individual business and defining the broader future of the global fintech ecosystem.
Tackling fragmentation
When asked about how realistic it is for a single platform to unify neo-banking, crypto and payments without losing depth or reliability, Berkovich noted that the gaming industry is often the first to adopt new payment innovations, making it a valuable testing ground. He explained, “Everyone is a bit tired of going to different processors and payment providers. It takes huge effort for clients to keep track of everything, especially to build teams in charge of it. Everyone wants something in one place.”
He emphasised that regulation plays a key role in enabling integration. “There are new regulations in Europe, in the U.S., wherever. It’s difficult for fintech to adapt, but gradually it’s happening. The more regulatory framework is clear and understandable, the easier it is to combine everything in one place,” Berkovich said.
Kea has taken a technology-focused approach, building its own core banking system and implementing an effective licensing strategy. Berkovich explained, “We focus on users, good UX, and strong relationship management. That’s always the best priority in this industry.”
Building trust and customer confidence
Trust remains a central challenge for fintech and iGaming alike. Berkovich highlighted the importance of long-term customer confidence, especially in sectors involving money and digital assets. “Marketing and being very fun works, but it doesn’t build long-term trust. Clients give you their money, they need to be comfortable with what’s happening. Regulation is very important,” he said.
He reflected on how perceptions have shifted over the last decade. “Ten years ago, people were wary of opening accounts with electronic money institutions. Now, clients are much more open to fintech solutions and tech-driven financial services. Many even prefer them over traditional banks.”
Adaptability is critical in a market driven by rapid innovation. Berkovich explained, “It helps to be adaptive, to move your requirements across different services and jurisdictions, ideally within one platform. That’s what we aim to do at Kea.”
Fintech growth and sustainability
Berkovich also addressed the sustainability of the current fintech growth model. “Fintech goes through cycles similar to tech. Growth at all costs used to dominate, but now profitability and healthy P&L are extremely important. You need a solid business model that works for clients, shareholders, and the business,” he said.
He noted that fintech investment is becoming more mature, with successful IPOs like Circle showing that the market is revitalising. “Fun times are ahead, but the industry is more measured now. Sustainability is key.”
He also highlighted the potential for AI to transform financial services, saying, “Let’s see what happens when AI helps improve the current financial technology space. That’s going to be a big change.”
Integrated fintech
Berkovich sees integrated fintech platforms as central to the evolution of iGaming and payments. “To offer the right service and remain competitive, fintech players need super effective licensing strategies, a focus on UX, and adaptability,” he said. He added, “Trust, regulation, and innovation are the pillars that will define the next generation of fintech leaders.”
As the industry continues to evolve, events like SiGMA provide a platform for discussion, collaboration and insight into emerging trends. “The industry is always changing. Conferences like this allow us to share ideas, learn from peers, and shape the future together,” Berkovich concluded.
