Betting limits could impact the 2027 NFL Draft in Washington, DC
The 2027 NFL Draft will take place from 29 April to 1 May 2027, at the National Mall, marking the first time the event will be hosted at the iconic location. The Draft Theater will be set against the backdrop of the United States Capitol, with the National Football League planning free fan activities, interactive exhibits, games, and public displays of the Vince Lombardi Trophy throughout the three-day event.
Fans attending the event may face restrictions on placing mobile sports bets because a large portion of the draft venue is located on federal land, where mobile sports betting is not permitted. The restrictions apply to areas including the National Mall and other federally managed locations.
While the event is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors, attendees planning to wager on the NFL Draft or other sporting events may need to leave federal property before accessing licensed sportsbook.
Federal land restrictions
Sports betting rules in Washington, DC, create a confusing landscape for visitors. In contrast, Virginia’s existing sports betting regulations restrict all kinds of NFL Draft betting, resulting in distinct rules for gamblers who cross state lines within the region.

Peter O’Reilly, the league’s executive vice president of club business and global events, emphasised the significance of bringing the draft to the capital. He called the NFL Draft one of the league’s most accessible events, with Washington serving as a symbolic background for football fans.
O’Reilly stated, “The NFL Draft continues to grow as one of our biggest and most accessible events, and we are excited to welcome fans and prospects to Washington, D.C., in 2027. Our nation’s capital will provide an incredible, iconically American stage to host fans from around the world, as we celebrate the next generation of NFL stars.”
The 2026 NFL Draft in Pittsburgh proved just how far the event has come. Over 805,000 people turned out over three days to see the extravaganza, setting a new record. Washington is now looking to build on that same momentum. The city sees an opportunity to combine football with history and highlight some of the country’s most historic buildings in one weekend. If they pull it off properly, Washington might provide yet another remarkable draft experience that draws fans together and reminds us why this event has become such a big deal in sport.
Rise in betting revenue
Several US sites reported strong sports betting revenue in April 2026, the same month as the NFL Draft (23–25 April). In New Jersey, sportsbooks made $102.1 million in total gaming revenue, up 12.8 per cent year on year. Pennsylvania reported $59 million in taxable sports wagering revenue, while Arizona recorded $59.8 million in gross gaming revenue, up 37.8 per cent from April 2025.
These excellent monthly results corresponded with the 2026 NFL Draft and represent increased betting activity throughout a busy sports schedule, which included the NBA and NHL playoffs, as well as the start of the MLB season.
NFL gambling policy
In October 2025, the league sent a memo to all 32 clubs emphasising that no players may wager on NFL games, manipulate games, or provide any inside information that could be utilised for betting purposes. The memorandum resulted from the federal government’s investigations into gambling among players from other leagues. The integrity of the NFL must be protected at all costs.
The memo spelled out exactly what players are and are not allowed to do when it comes to gambling.
