Argentina’s online betting operator bplay has entered Santiago del Estero through a partnership with local concessionaire Casinos del Sol, becoming the province’s only legally authorised online casino.

This launch extends bplay’s footprint to eight jurisdictions nationwide. Owned by the Boldt Group, which has more than 70 years in Argentina’s entertainment industry, bplay already operates in the City and Province of Buenos Aires, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos, Córdoba, Mendoza, and Jujuy.

Licencing under decentralised regulation

The collaboration with Casinos del Sol enables bplay to obtain the required licence and to operate in Santiago del Estero. Since the country has a decentralised regulatory system, online gambling is permitted only at the provincial level. In other words, operators must secure individual permissions in each jurisdiction.

While provinces like Buenos Aires and Córdoba have advanced licencing systems, others like Mendoza and Corrientes still ban online gambling altogether.

bplay’s expansion is alsoforecast to generate new tax revenue and create jobs like customer support, compliance, marketing, and IT. Additionally, it reinforces Casinos del Sol’s role as a regional economic driver. The new opportunities complement the existing land-based casino jobs.

Moreover, online expansion often helps boost tourism, though indirectly, as provincial casinos use digital platforms to attract visitors to physical venues, restaurants, and entertainment.

Licenced casinos, for instance, usually contribute a percentage of gross gaming revenue (GGR) to the provincial treasury. bplay is also exclusive in Santiago del Estero. This ensures that all legal online casino taxes pour directly to the province, financing public programmes and infrastructure.

Marketing and ambassador campaigns

Aside from regulatory extension, bplay has also invested greatly in building its brand visibility. It has promoted a FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign and intensified its profile through ambassador partnerships. Last March, it collaborated with a well-known television personality to serve as the face of its online casino vertical. The campaign focused on consolidating bplay’s position in Argentina’s digital market.

The country’s online gambling audience is governed by young and digitally savvy players aged 18-34. Additionally, middle-income groups form the bulk of bettors with most play for financial gain, entertainment, and convenience. Meanwhile, football betting and online slots remain top choices.

But risks remain. This includes unlicensed platforms that could syphon players, thereby reducing provincial revenue. Additionally, due to the fragmented provincial rules, this could increase compliance costs among operators. Expansion also requires responsible gaming campaigns to mitigate addiction risks and healthcare burdens.

International spotlight and FA scrutiny

Earlier this year, bplay attracted international attention by appointing Argentina and Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez as a sports ambassador, prompting England’s Football Association (FA) to investigate whether the endorsement complied with its rules on betting-related promotions by active players.

To date, the country continues to tighten its gambling rules. This includes implementing new national bills to limit promotions targeting minors, ban celebrity endorsements, and require health warnings, while criminalising illegal operators and their advertisers.
